I am currently looking to recruit a Technical Author to join my client based in Hertfordshire

Vacancy description

The Technical Author will join a new expanding team within the innovative Product Development team and their innovative and prestigious work into robotics and automation engineering.

Roles and Responsibilities

Working with the design team and other stakeholders you will produce and edit quality documentation to support the design, launch and operation of a wide range of electro-mechanical equipment.

Also to analyse the needs of the design, testing, manufacturing and operations teams and translate these into a coherent suite of processes and documents, determining the optimum format and media.

Having previous experience of complex electro-mechanical equipment and control systems would be preferred.

You will be able to analyse complex systems and synthesise documents and processes which describe their operation in clear plain in English.

You will write:

  • Engineering documents, such as: technical requirements, functional design specifications, interface control documents, process charts, mechanical flow diagrams, manufacturing process documents, packaging and transportation specifications, factory acceptance tests, commissioning guides and site acceptance tests.
  • End-user documents, such as: installation guides, operation and maintenance manuals, fault analysis trees, repair procedures, spare parts catalogues
  • Training material

Documents will be written with a view to multi-media output and may be targeted at on-line, tablet or other mobile devices as well as PDF and hard copy.

Documents may include embedded video and animations.

Areas of Accountability

  • Delivery of technically accurate and aesthetically satisfactory documents
  • Development and documentation of processes

Adherence to project defined milestone

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Minimum:

  • Technical background in electro-mechanical engineering
  • Practical experience of the maintenance and operation of equipment
  • Ability to write technical descriptions in non-technical language
  • HNC/Degree or equivalent in technology related discipline
  • Self-motivated and proactive response to rapidly evolving needs
  • Previous experience of writing Systems Engineering documents such as: Requirements, Functional Specification, Technical Specifications / Basis of Design
  • Excellent communication skills including a high level of technical spoken and written English

Preferred (in addition to minimum)

  • Knowledge of authoring systems to produce media independent output
  • Knowledge of embedded control systems
  • Knowledge of safety related requirements and standards
  • Ability to produce and edit Illustrations and diagrams
  • Knowledge of translation processes
  • Knowledge of other European language
  • Knowledge of ENO and ISO design standards, European design directives and CE Technical File requirements.
  • Membership of ISTC
  • Creation of video “YouTube” type clips.
  • Inclusion of embedded animations
  • Experience of linking CAD systems to user documentation
  • Experience of EDMS and CMS systems to manage control and distribution of documentation

Knowledge of Intelligent documentation
