Vacancy Description

The Realisation Engineering team takes automation engineering project management accountability to make a new Automated Distribution Centre ( CFC – Customer Fulfilment Centre) a reality. They are the central point for all automation engineering aspects of a new CFC. This is delivered by using matrix resources from automation engineering teams and working with colleagues in other departments. The implementation (fit out of Automation) covered by our colleagues in Engineering Implementation (UK or International), with the realisation engineer remaining with the project to ensure full support until ‘go-live’.

As the team manager you provide both technical and people leadership & management. Taking overall accountability for the team in their deliverables and overall strategy. Ensuring operational needs are met and the direction of the team aligns with business and engineering strategies, standards and expectations.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the work of the team ensuring deliverables and accountabilities are met on time and budget, to the right standard and customer expectations are met
  • Manage and balance the work of the team, ensuring that individual projects do not cause detriment to another
  • Communication & reporting across teams and to project stakeholders
  • Stakeholder management
  • Responsible for many engineering commercial aspects of the project; including formulation of the capital budget, contractual arrangements, management of engineering variations, working closely with procurement, finance and admin colleagues
  • Manage and take ownership of common themes / issues across all projects
  • Point of escalation for realisation engineers
  • Risk identification and mitigation, anticipating engineering challenges and opportunities across all projects
  • Ensure yourself and the team, work to and follow all CDM guidance or international equivalent, both external (CDM Regulations 2015 and associated ACOPs) and internal (CDM15, HS&E policy and associated Arrangement Policies). Seek guidance from the HS&E team where there is uncertainty.
  • Work with engineering planning team to ensure planners and realisation engineers are working effectively to best practice and complement each other in their work
  • Work closely with product & field engineering team who provide product technical detail and support to projects, ensuring effective & positive working relationships of teams
  • Effectively manage and coordinate the team of realisation engineers
  • Develop and grow individuals in the team
  • Recruit new members to the team as required based on resource forecasts and approved headcount budgets
  • Be prepared to deputise for Central Automation Engineering Manager as required
  • Ensure resilience across the team
  • Establish, maintain and championing both engineering and project best practice and standards
  • Conduct regular strategic reviews of the direction of the team and the ways of working to ensure it is appropriate and aligned prevailing business needs and climate
  • Develop and maintain close working relationships with key customers and collaborators representing realisation engineering and ensuring realisation engineering meets their expectations
  • Proactively monitor and respond to project budget expenditure. Take a leading role is setting future budgets being proactive in controlling and reducing future costs
  • Undertake specific team and departmental tasks. Initiating, planning, consulting on and managing process change, project managing specific developments; taking part and leading process improvement and other projects

Minimum Requirements

  • Aptitude to debate detail (both technical and commercial) with both internal and external parties
  • Commercially aware and consider direct and indirect cost impacts on decisions and proposals of yourself and team
  • Deliver projects on time and within approved budgets
  • Excellent technical and practical competence relating to automation and general engineering
  • Experience of projects and products in manufacturing, automotive, airports, FMCG distribution or similar field
  • IT literate, proficient with Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite and comfortable using project software
  • Project Engineering - demonstrable experience & success
  • Project, Programme and Portfolio management of engineering projects
  • Technical / Engineering qualification, to degree level in a relevant field
  • Appreciation of applicable directives, codes, standards etc. (e.g. Machinery Directive, CDM 2015 etc.)
  • Work in and ensure others work in a safe manner at all times
  • Strong people Skills

Preferred (in addition to minimum)

  • Able to define and establish management process
  • Able to draw on a range of project management skills, tools and approaches
  • Experienced with managing remote teams
  • Familiarisation with CAD (Sketchup, Autocad, Revit etc.)
