Manufacturing Quality Engineer - Hertfordshire

Minstrell Recruitment currently requires an experienced Manufacturing Quality Engineer to join our client based in Hertfordshire to in part help guide their suppliers as they move from prototype small volume to high volume.

This role will suit someone who has also helped a business scale up and grow rapidly and their accompanying suppliers.

Vacancy description

The Manufacturing Development Team is responsible for the smooth transition of in house designed engineering systems, developed by the Product Development Team, into manufacture. Once successfully in manufacture the product will be handed over to the Engineering Supply Chain team, who manage ongoing manufacture.

The Manufacturing Quality Engineer’s role is to put in place the appropriate quality frameworks with suppliers including system and component testing, operating procedures and quality plans to allow this hand over to be successful.

They will identify, investigate and address manufacturing quality issues during the product’s pre-production stage. Clearly documenting and communicating these during handover.

The Manufacturing Quality engineers will also when requested support the Engineering Supply Chain Team in the selection of component and system suppliers.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Identify and implement best practices both internally and with suppliers
  • Put in place and verify the supplier’s quality framework
  • Assist qualification of new manufacturers or processes
  • Identify key critical parameters to be monitored at the manufacturer’s site and agree test and reporting methods with suppliers
  • Ensure that the suppliers test capability is at an acceptable level, including process such as measurement systems analysis where appropriate
  • Manage the creation and implementation of process capability charts and reports
  • Identify key statistical process controls (SPC) parameters and work with suppliers to ensure adequate monitoring and reporting
  • Ensure that any manufacturing quality issues identified in pre-production trials are addressed prior to handover
  • Actively participate in the Patent process for the Engineering department
  • The place of work is Welwyn Garden City, but the role will require regular presence at other UK and international locations as well as travel to national and international suppliers
  • You may be asked to perform tasks as required by management deemed as a reasonable request

Qualifications

We are looking for someone with the following skills but not limited to:

  • An engineering / science qualification
  • Experience in design for manufacture and manufacturing quality in areas such as industrial equipment, instrumentation, high volume manufacture or FMCG
  • Experience in value engineering
  • Experience in continuous process improvement
  • Experience of process capability, statistical process controls (SPC) and critical parameter management.
  • Applies quality tools: FMEA; FAST; Critical Parameters; 6 Sigma
  • Demonstrates awareness and application of analytical tools to aid the manufacturing process
  • Ability to build relationships from shop floor to management level, identify and clearly communicate key information and tailor the communication for the audience
  • Prioritise issues, communicate reasoning and negotiate for resources when needed
  • Both technical and commercial awareness
  • Ability to write work instruction and technical reports

In Addition to:

  • Sound mathematical and technical skills
  • Experience in leading a team, balancing various customer need and requirements
  • Experience in successfully transferring products from one manufacturing site to a new one
  • Good investigative and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Good interpersonal skills and organisational skills
  • Knowledge of statistical packages and Microsoft Office systems normally required

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Proven track record successfully transferring complex and novel products successfully into manufacturer
  • Experience in introducing appropriate quality frameworks and statistical process control to new suppliers
  • Coaching suppliers in tier 1 vendor quality management
  • Proven track record identifying and resolving quality issues in manufacture and improve yield
  • Proven track record of successfully introducing new suppliers and building appropriate supplier relationships
  • Experience in working across a spectrum of manufacturing processes including injection moulded and vacuum formed plastics, metal extrusion, metal fabrication and forming and electronics
  • Knowledge of latest manufacturing processes and how best to apply them to ensure the highest manufacturing quality and cost optimisation
